FUSIK is a band that takes its audience on a rhythmic journey. In the short span of time since the band’s early 2005 conception, they have been working hard at making people move in the South Florida club circuit. One of the most promising bands in the area, FUSIK has definitely put a new school twist on an eclectic mix of old school classic sounds. As the band states, “FUSIK has been created to re-instate A PURPOSE in Hip-Hop music.” And they’re doing so by stirring up a sound consisting of jazz, funk, soul, and some extra Latin spice pulled from their own cultural influences, to produce one very flavorful mix that reflects hip hop fundamentals. It’s no wonder the group has such a loyal b-boy following, one of the attributing factors to their current successes. So much so that two of the group’s members are known for taking breaks during sets and taking it to the floor in order to exhibit some of their b-boy talents. One article in the Sun Sentinel newspaper summed it up best, “It's hard to stay seated when FUSIK unleashes its hip-hop and funk.” Recently the quartet has been penetrating the scene with their hip hop/funk fusion. The past few months have been pivotal in the band’s career. They’ve gone from playing at intimate lounges as well as for large 3,000 spectator size crowds, having their album release party at this year’s EVOLUTION III, performing alongside hip hop emcee legend KRS-ONE, and even gaining critical acclaim internationally with their song “FUSIK for the B-boys/B-girls” being a highlight song at the Battle of the Year 2006 in Korea. Produced independently, their self-titled debut album, FUSIK—ONLY A FEW ARE SICK, combines the talents of Anton “Sanchez” Rivera III (bass/guitar), Mack Henry Moore III (guitar/bass), Daniel “Felix”Garcia (drums), and Andrews “Non-M.S.” Mujica (percussion) playing their eloquently raw brand of music. With so much going on in the quartet’s current agenda, it’s hard to fathom that they were spawned not even two years ago. Paying homage to Ft. Lauderdale as their birthplace, FUSIK’s formation is accredited to random occurrences and a shared passion for music. As fate had it, Felix and Mack initially encountered one another at a local music store and continued having a number of frequent run-ins. Mack and Sanchez were long time friends, and Felix and Non-M.S. both were members of the b-boy squadron, Unique Styles Crew. Jamming a few times here and there and playing at friends’ house parties, the group had no intention of branding themselves as a musical act. Eventually, one thing led to another and they found themselves performing under the band name “FUSIK” at a local b-boy spot called Catalyst, to then hitting the road to perform at Outbreak II in Orlando and collectively realizing that this was something to be taken seriously. Even on the album the band is reminiscent of their days of jamming as a garage band. The jazzy track “One Won” is particularly special to the members, being that it was their very first song, and was conjured up during their early conception. The track “Higher” seems to be another band favorite with its ascension of rhythm and funk. “FUSIK for the B-boys/B-Girls” is a spin on classic b-boy anthems and speaks for itself. On the track “Funktana,” the band pays tribute to a song that they all musically connect with, Carlos Santana’s, “Soul Sacrifice.” FUSIK also engaged in collaborative efforts in “Welcome to Our World,” and showcases the soulful singer, Natalie Fernandez, and the lyrically conscious emcee, Johnny Matrik, who also contributed his talents on the keys throughout the album. Overall, each track offers an eclectic mix of sound that illustrates the collaboration of each member’s unique cultural and musical influences. With a mission to make their audience move, FUSIK’s musical fire is definitely the fuel to get the dance floor hot and ensure them a future that will burn bright. Simply put, FUSIK produces a fusion of music and has only one thing to prove…”Only a FEW are SICK.”
