Biography
Garrett Wall - Daylight Nighttime
Garrett Wall has travelled full circle since the release of his debut album All of the Above. Recorded and released in Slovenia, S. Korea and Ireland it debuted Wall's acoustic approach to songwriting and brought him critical acclaim and media attention in his native Ireland. After signing an international publishing deal with Peermusic Ireland he moved on to an edgier, electric sound with Change (Rico Records/Celtic Collections), a much rockier and dynamic album scoring him several radio hits and culminating in a series of prestigous concerts throughout Europe and the U.S.
"Long recognised as one of our better songwriters..." , Hotpress, Ireland, 2002
Relocating to Madrid brought even more changes to Wall's writing and overall sound and when offered a deal by Peermusic Spain / Ireland to record his third album he teamed up with producers Maaya Thila who added a new depth to Gravity which was subsequently release in Ireland, Spain and Germany.
Wall regularly sings and composes for both television and cinema in Spain and "These Days", apart from being picked for heavy rotation on the national radio station M80, was also be featured as part of the soundtrack to spanish film Amor En Defensa Propia (Virgin Records / Universal Pictures 2006). Wall was also invited by the director to sing a version of the theme song Shattered.
"In the capital, Madrid, he has little by little become something of an icon.." , Top 40 magazine, Spain, 2003
A powerful live performer Wall was invited in 2005 to take part in the Aygolive series of concerts throughout Spain which culminated in two successful supports to Ivan Ferreiro and the inclusion of "daylight, nighttime" on the Aygolive compilation album (2006) alongside spanish artists such as Deluxe and La Habitacion Roja. "expanding universe", also taken from the new album, will be included in the soundstrack to short movie El Efecto Rubik to be released in September 2006.
"Daylight, Nighttime" - a long, hard day's night working on album #4
As a result of working together in the world of advertising and soundtracks, producer / engineer / musician Jose Luis Chicote invited Wall to work on the follow-up to Gravity with the recording of some acoustic demos in the Summer of 2004. In the following November top Irish drummer Ger Farrell flew over to Round Sound Studios in Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, to begin what would be an unforgettable year of recording and writing.
Featuring musicians from six different countries; Spain, United States, Ireland, England, Cuba and Slovenia and including Paul Moore (Bass), world renowned violinists Livia Sohn and Bojan Cvetreznik of Terrafolk fame, Grammy nominated Cuban rapper Nilo MC, cajon player Robbie Jones and Carlos Raya (Guitar/Pedal Steel) it is perhaps the first album to capture Wall's true sound, to balance the live with the studio. It is both exuberant pop and introspective folk, the dual identities of alt-country and indie rock.
Day or Night? - two sides to every story
Originally conceived as an album with one half/side offering a full band sound (daylight) and the other a more acoustic intimate production (nighttime) it soon became obvious that each song in itself was capable of achieving this dynamic. It's strength lies in an honesty of production which catered to each song as an individual whole while Wall's voice and writing style maintained a consistency throughout the 13 songs.
The 13 songs sing of hope, life, love, loss and joy yet offer each one with a sincerity and vulnerability that comes when an artist truly bares his soul. In terms of lyrical and musical sensibility it is Wall's most mature and complete work to date and shows that this is an artists who is going from strength to strength.
The album is dedicated to Wall's father who passed away during the recording of the album.
Produced by Jose Luis Chicote and Garrett Wall
