Soraya, cantautora colombo-americana, regresa luego de una batalla de tres años contra el cáncer del seno, ofreciendo sin embargo su más poderosa creación musical, Soraya. Su triunfal retorno es energía revestida de inspiración. "Casi", el primer sencillo de Soraya, será lanzado a mediados de marzo de 2003 con su nuevo socio EMI Latino. Guitarras acústicas suenan con fuerza en las notas iniciales y uno se pregunta si esta es una producción de Nashville. Pero no, las nítidas vocales de Soraya hacen que "Casi" dé un vuelco hacia un aire decididamente pop, una súper balada llena de entusiasmo. "Este es mi canto del triunfo de la vida", dice Soraya. "Habla de ese instante en que casi te rindes y te entregas, pero al fin tocas tierra nuevamente y recuperas tu estabilidad". Sea que busques tu camino de salida tras una pérdida amorosa, la tristeza o el cáncer, Soraya encuentra esa fibra común en la desgracia, el lugar en donde la tragedia es vencida y la dicha surge nuevamente, comprobando que sin el dolor no conoceríamos la alegría y la dulzura. Y "Casi", definitivamente estimula.

Con una entusiasta acogida, Soraya debutó en 1996 con su álbum En Esta Noche/On Nights Like This (Polygram Latino/Island Records). Su carrera despegó cuando una canción de este álbum ocupó el primer lugar en las listas del Billboard de la Canción Latina Pop, en 1996, y otra ocupó el sexto lugar. Al lanzar simultáneamente versiones en inglés y en español de una misma producción escrita y grabada por ella, Soraya produjo un instantáneo éxito transcultural con "De Repente"/"Suddenly." El éxito fue inmediato en Latinoamérica y en el mercado hispano en los Estados Unidos, y luego de componer la banda sonora para una serie internacional de televisión, le siguieron ventas de cientos de miles de CD's en Alemania y Australia. Era un hecho rotundo: la música de Soraya se escuchaba en todas partes. Una estrella había surgido y su potencial era ilimitado.

En 1998 ella continuó rápidamente con Wall of Smiles, coautora de la pista principal con su ídolo musical Carole King. Su inconfundible voz y el poder de las melodías le significaron invitaciones a una gira internacional con Sting, Alannis Morisette, Michael Bolton y Natalie Merchant.
En el 2000, dos semanas antes de iniciar su propia gira nacional para promocionar su tercera producción Cuerpo y Alma/I'm Yours, a sus 31 años de edad sufrió un duro revés: le diagnosticaron cáncer del seno en etapa 3, una enfermedad que le había costado la vida a su madre, a su tía y a su abuela.

Atemorizada, devastada y pasando por todo lo inimaginable, Soraya detuvo su carrera musical y se dedicó al tratamiento del cáncer. Cuanto más la acosaba la enfermedad, mayores eran las preguntas que se hacía. Se preguntaba por ejemplo: "¿Por qué una mujer hispana resulta afectada por el cáncer del seno en sus últimas etapas? ¿Por qué las mujeres latinas eludimos el tema del cáncer del seno?". Trabajando con la Fundación Susan G. Komen, ella encontró la respuesta: el malestar cultural con la enfermedad misma ha creado una falta de conciencia, y esa falta de conciencia contribuye al aumento de casos diagnosticados en etapa avanzada, lo cual aumenta los índices de mortalidad.

En "Casi," Soraya canta: "¿Por qué yo? ¿por qué hoy? ¿por qué esto?... Preguntas con respuestas que vendrán solo con el tiempo". Ver hoy a Soraya es darse cuenta de que ella tiene un propósito en la tierra aún mayor que el de llevar a la gente a la música. Luego de dos años de intenso tratamiento contra el cáncer del seno, la salud de Soraya le permitió volver a la música.
Dedicó un año a hablar públicamente y a escribir Soraya, el registro sonoro de ese momento exuberante en su vida, y firmado con EMI Latin en el otoño de 2002. Ella inmediatamente acudió a los estudios para coordinar, ejecutar y producir este exquisito e inspirador CD.

La misma confianza definitivamente femenina que le permite a Soraya hablar tan conmovedoramente sobre el cáncer, le permite igualmente romper barreras musicales. Aunque respeta sus raíces musicales latinas, no está sometida a sus tradiciones. Este es el vivo testimonio de un alma valiente que se muestra sin tapujos. El sello distintivo de Soraya ha sido su habilidad para trascender géneros y manejar con destreza una mezcla de folk, música latina, R&B, pop y country, todo ello dentro de un estilo muy suyo. Pero ahora, en un momento fresco y creativo, ella surge con tonalidades creadas con todo esmero para maravillarnos por la habilidad para hacer que temas tan serios convivan perfectamente con melodías llenas de vida. Soraya explica que en una de sus canciones ella escribió: "Por cada silencio una canción" y añadió: "Esto realmente resume mi renacimiento físico y musical. No puedo cambiar que me dio cáncer, pero he decidido no permitir que mi espíritu sea quebrantado".

Con este trabajo, que lleva su propio nombre, Soraya comprueba que el camino artístico y el propósito se pueden fusionar y florecer incluso en términos comerciales: el álbum tiene varias canciones listas para la radio. Soraya produjo también el álbum, plasmando canciones y mensajes vibrantes en todo momento. "Estas canciones tienen emociones de tal intensidad que supe que la única forma de grabarlas era en vivo con mi banda. Deseaba capturar la intensa emoción de la letra con la viva energía de los músicos. Hice sola la preproducción y luego fui al estudio con mi banda y puse en libertad las canciones".

Cuando se le pregunta sobre el cambio en su vida, Soraya afirma: "Como mujer, nunca me sentí más viva y completa que ahora. Como artista, este es el mejor trabajo de mi carrera. Disfruté plenamente con la producción de este CD y la energía que se respira en las canciones lo demuestra. Mi trabajo como compositora alcanzó un nuevo nivel y creo que mi voz es portadora de gratitud en cada nota que canto".

Tanto con la música como con su mensaje hablado, Soraya ha regresado, moviendo a la gente, en todo el sentido de la palabra.

Soraya, a Colombian-American singer-songwriter, is back after a three-year battle with breast cancer, offering up her most powerful release yet, Soraya. Her triumphant return is inspiration packaged in energy. Soraya features 11 songs in Spanish and one in English; songs so intimate and energized they naturally form a concept album that can't help but communicate how Soraya is feeling today: positive, empowered, energetic, and dedicated, both to her music and her message of hope for women with cancer.

Soraya's first single is "Casi," released mid-March, 2003 with her new partner EMI Latin. Acoustic guitars strum hard in the opening bars and one wonders if this is a Nashville production. Then a little slide guitar, and one's convinced it's clear-cut modern country. But not so fast. Soraya's polished vocals turn "Casi" into a decidedly pop-sounding, upbeat super-ballad. "This is my survivor song," Soraya says. "It speaks to that instant when you almost give up and let go, but at the end your feet stayed grounded and you regain your stability." Whether finding your way through lost love, grief, or cancer, Soraya finds the common thread in misfortune; the place where tragedy subsides and joy re-emerges - that without the down, there could be no up so sweet. And "Casi" is definitely an upper.

Soraya debuted in 1996 to critical raves for En Esta Noche/On Nights Like This (Polygram Latino/Island Records). Her career took flight when two songs from that album hit #1 on Billboard's Latin Pop Airplay charts in 1996, with another going to #6. By simultaneously releasing English and Spanish versions of the work she both wrote and recorded, Soraya produced an instant cross-cultural hit with "De Repente"/"Suddenly." Success in Latin America and the US Spanish market was immediate, after writing the soundtrack for an international TV series, hundreds of thousands of CD sales in Germany and Australia followed. That sealed it – Soraya's music resonated everywhere. She was an emerging star with unlimited potential.

She followed up quickly in 1998 with Wall of Smiles, co-writing the lead track with her musical idol Carole King. Her distinctive voice and powerful melodies earned her invitations to tour internationally with Sting, Alannis Morisette, Michael Bolton and Natalie Merchant. In 2000, two weeks before embarking on her own national tour to promote her third effort, Cuerpo y Alma/I'm Yours, 31-year-old Soraya was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer, a disease that had taken her mother, aunt and grandmother.
Frightened, devastated, and everything else you'd expect, Soraya put her career on hold to pursue cancer treatment. The more her life became dominated by her illness, the more questions she had. Why, for example, are Hispanic women diagnosed with later stages of breast cancer? Why are Latinas not talking about breast cancer? Working with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, she found the answer: a cultural discomfort with the disease itself has created a lack of awareness, and that lack of awareness contributes to later stage diagnoses that raise mortality rates.

In "Casi," Soraya sings, "Why me, why now, why this…The answers are smiling hiding deep within…" Indeed. To meet Soraya today is to become convinced that she has a purpose on earth even grander than moving people with music. Incredibly outspoken and bright, her unforced, poetic speaking style turns casual listeners into avid disciples of awareness and self-detection. And now, the music and message are inseparable. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation chose her to be its Latin spokesperson, and Soraya has toured tirelessly in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Mexico and throughout Central and South America generating substantial press activity for breast cancer awareness. After two years of aggressive breast cancer treatment, Soraya's health allowed her to return to music. She spent a year public speaking and writing Soraya – the soundtrack of that exuberant time in her life - and signed with EMI Latin in Fall, 2002. She immediately went into the studio to arrange, perform and produce this exquisite and inspirational CD.

The same definitive female confidence that enables Soraya to speak so poignantly about cancer enables her to break musical ground as well. She shows a respect for her Latin musical roots without being bound by their traditions. This is a record made by a brave soul willing to lay herself bare. Soraya's steady signature has been her ability to transcend genres and deftly mix folk, Latin, R&B, pop and country together in a style all her own.

But now, with fresh creative momentum, she emerges with even more tightly crafted tunes that make one wonder how such serious themes find themselves at home inside such peppy melodies. "In one of my songs I write: "Por cada silencio una canción" (‘For Every Silence, There Is a Song') this really sums up my physical and musical rebirth," explains Soraya. "I can't change that I got cancer, but I have chosen to not let it break my spirit".

With this self-titled work, Soraya proves that artistry and purpose can blend and then flourish on commercial terms – the album has a big and healthy handful of radio-ready songs. Soraya produced the album as well, die-casting a vibrancy into each cut. "These songs have such intense emotions I knew that the only way to record it was to do it live with my band. I wanted to capture the raw emotion of the lyrics with the live energy of my musicians. I did the pre production alone then went into the studio with my band and set the songs free".

Asked how life has changed her, Soraya responds, "As a woman, I have never felt more alive and more complete than I do now. As an artist, this is the best work of my career. I completely enjoyed producing this CD and it shows in the energy of the songs. My writing rose to a new level and I believe my voice is carrying my gratitude in every note it sings."

With both music and message at the mic, Soraya is back, moving people – in every sense of the word.
